Males are dark brown, with a vertical white bar between the second and third dorsal fins and another vertical white bar between the third dorsal fin and caudal peduncle.
Females have 6 – 7 vertical dark bars on the body.
Juveniles are yellow, but darker towards the posterior part of the body, with a vertical white bar near the pectoral fin.
