Characteristics

  • Usually occurs singly or in pairs. During breeding season, may form groups composed of a single male with one or two females.

  • Mainly feeds on algae.

  • Recorded to live for more than 30 years in the wild.

Description

  • Adults:

    • Body yellowish brown but becomes increasingly darker towards caudal fin.

    • A white, scalpel-like spine on each side of caudal peduncle.

    • Tail black.

  • Juveniles:

    • Anterior part of body yellowish brown with numerous small, blue dots.

    • Posterior part of body dark blue to dark brown with numerous narrow, pale vertical bars.

    • A white, scalpel-like spine on each side of caudal peduncle.
