Threadsail filefish

Characteristics

  • Mostly found singly, but can also form small group.
  • Feeds on planktons, jellyfishes, fishes, small crustaceans and benthic organisms including worms.
  • In Japan, males reported to be territorial during breeding seasons and have harems of 1 – 4 resident females. Females will scatter eggs over sandy bottoms but only guard the eggs for a few minutes, whereas males leave immediately after spawning. Eggs are left unguarded until hatching in three days.

Description

  • Body colour and pattern able to change according to surroundings.
  • Body colour generally brown with mottling of brown, dark and white.
  • Short, dark brown stripes on sides.
  • In males, filamentous extension from the second ray of second dorsal fin is found.
