Orangespot surgeonfish


  • Observed to form small groups.
  • Observed to share coral crevices with the Sailfin tang.
  • Benthic feeding species, feeding on algae and detritus.
  • Can live to more than 30 years in the wild.


  • Body grey to brown. One colour phase with anterior body pale and posterior body dark.
  • A thick horizontal orange band, sometimes with a bluish margin, runs from behind eye to mid body.
  • Body yellow.
  • No orange band in small juveniles.
