Yin Tsz Ngam

About The Site

Ever since a cement carrier ship sank to the bottom of this dive site in the 60s, the shipwreck has become the spotlight of Ying Tsz Ngam.

The wreck lies below the cliffs of Sai Wan Shan, a small hill that separates Long Ke Wan and Tai Long Sai Wan, on the eastern tips of Sai Kung. Not far from the cliff drop, the wreck is broken into 2 chunks, spreading across the seafloor at about 6 – 10 m deep. Today, columns of neatly stacked cement can still be observed by divers. While forming an intriguing landscape, these cement columns also provide a unique habitat for marine creatures.

Depth at this dive site averages at 10 m, although towards the east waters can reach over 20 m deep. As there are no islands sheltering waves from this area, Yin Tsz Ngam is associated with strong winds and rougher waves as well as occasional strong currents, making this site more suitable for experienced divers.

Composed of rocky reefs and a sandy bottoms, the dive site is also sprinkled with small clumps of coral colonies. The signature wreck is home to moray eels, cardinal fishes, bronze sweepers, and other commonly encountered reef fishes such as sweetlips, scads, flatheads, and wrasses. Boxfishes, barracudas, surgeonfishes, Valentin’s sharpnose puffer, pipefishes, and anthiases have also been reported in the area. As live sharksuckers have been sighted in this dive site, their hosts – often large marine animals – might also be found by lucky divers.

The dive site’s wreck also accommodates invertebrates including nudibranchs, feather stars, and polychaetes. Diadema sea urchins thrive in the site, so divers should pay extra attention to safety.
